Spearfish for these exotic fish or catch the weigh in! There's a nominal fee of $15 per person and a bounty of $500, plus prizes, for numbers of lionfish. Captains meeting at 8:30 am, hunt lionfish from 10 am - 4 pm, awards immediately afterwards.
A recent Abaco lionfish tournament generated more than 200 lionfish per boat. Yes, they have venomous spines but are safe and tasty to eat once the spines have been cut away. We recommend you bring snorkel gear, heavy gloves, a bucket, thermos and a 3 pronged spear if you can find one. We have applied for permission to use scuba gear and will advise. Should this happen, you can only scuba for lionfish. Treasure Divers is working on a per-person dive boat rate for those who don't have a boat. Call 242-365-8571 or visit www.treasure-divers.com. You don't need to be a tournament angler to participate in this unusual event, so bring your friends and guests.
Help us prevent the lionfish from destroying the Abaco Reefs! There's also a lionfish tournament in Green Turtle Cay on Saturday, June 19. All for conservation!
